Technology leasing vs hire purchase for a UK SME
Reviewed by Luca Scalzo, Director, WFYA Limited · Last reviewed
For most technology, leasing suits a small or medium business better than hire purchase, because IT loses value quickly and leasing makes it easy to upgrade at the end of the term. Hire purchase makes more sense for equipment you expect to use for its whole working life and want to own, such as core network hardware.
Both spread the cost over a fixed term and keep cash in the business.
How do technology leasing and hire purchase compare?
| Technology leasing | Hire purchase | |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the equipment | The lender (lessor) | The lender until the final payment, then your business |
| Typical term | Often matched to the refresh cycle of the equipment | Often matched to the working life of the equipment |
| End of the agreement | Return, upgrade to new equipment or continue on a further rental, depending on the agreement | You own the equipment |
| Tax relief (general rule) | Rentals are usually a business expense | Business can usually claim capital allowances |
| VAT | Charged on each rental | Usually paid at the start on the purchase price |
| Balance sheet | Depends on the type of lease and the accounting standard your business uses; ask your accountant | Usually shown as an asset, with the finance as a liability |
| Software and services | Sometimes included with hardware, depending on the lender | Usually limited to the hardware |
| Best for | Laptops, desktops and equipment refreshed every few years | Long life equipment you want to own |

Which questions help you decide?
- How long will this equipment stay useful to us?
- Do we want to own it, or just use it?
- Do we want a built in point to upgrade?
- Is software or installation a large part of the cost?

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to lease or buy IT equipment?
If you replace equipment every few years, leasing usually fits better. If you plan to use it until it stops working, buying on hire purchase can cost less over time. Compare the total payable and the after tax cost.
Can I upgrade equipment during a technology lease?
Some leases allow upgrades during the term, usually by settling the old agreement into a new one. Check the agreement before you sign.
What happens to my data when leased equipment is returned?
Your business remains responsible for its data. Make sure devices are securely wiped before return, or ask the supplier for a certified data erasure service.
Can a small business lease IT equipment?
Yes. Leasing is common for small businesses, usually for a full office or project rather than a single device. We arrange finance from £10,000 up to £1 million, depending on your requirements and circumstances.
