IT equipment finance and technology leasing for UK businesses

Reviewed by Luca Scalzo, Director, WFYA Limited · Last reviewed

IT equipment finance lets a business spread the cost of computers, servers, networks and other technology over a fixed term, usually through a lease or hire purchase. It keeps cash in the business and makes it easier to upgrade equipment before it becomes outdated.

We Finance Your Asset is a credit broker, not a lender. We introduce technology finance applications from UK businesses to lenders on our panel.

Who can apply for IT equipment finance?

    • Small and medium businesses equipping an office or a new team.
    • Companies refreshing laptops and desktops on a regular cycle.
    • Businesses investing in servers, storage, networking or security.
    • Firms rolling out phone systems, EPOS or audio visual equipment.

      Apply online

Tell us about your business and the equipment in our application form.

    2. 02

      We review and approach lenders

We check the details and the supplier's quote with you and introduce your application to lenders on our panel that finance technology.

      Decision and payment

If a lender approves, you sign the agreement with the lender and the lender pays the supplier.

What can IT equipment finance cover?

    • Laptops, desktops and tablets for staff.
    • Servers, storage and data centre equipment.
    • Networking, wifi and cyber security hardware.
    • Telephone systems and unified communications.
    • EPOS, printers and audio visual equipment.
    • Software.

We arrange finance from £10,000 up to £1 million, depending on your requirements and circumstances, so finance usually suits a full office or project rather than a single laptop.

Should you lease technology or buy it on hire purchase?

Technology loses value quickly, so many businesses prefer to lease it and replace it at the end of the term. Hire purchase suits equipment you expect to use for its whole working life, such as core network hardware. Read technology leasing vs hire purchase for a side by side comparison.

What documents do you need to apply for IT equipment finance?

Our application form asks for the information lenders need first, so it helps to have it ready:

    • Your company name and Companies House number.
    • The director's contact details, date of birth and home address history.
    • Details of the asset: what it is, its price, the supplier and, for vehicles, the registration and mileage if known.
    • The deposit you plan to put in and the term you would like.
    • Your last three months of business bank statements, which you can upload with the form.

Lenders may then ask for more, such as recent accounts, proof of identity or the supplier's invoice, depending on the amount and your business.

How long does IT equipment finance take?

It depends on the asset, the lender and how quickly the documents arrive. The lender then makes its own decision; straightforward applications with complete documents move fastest, while larger amounts, used or specialist assets and newer businesses can take longer.

What deposit and term should you expect for IT equipment finance?

Most agreements involve some upfront payment, and the amount depends on the lender, the asset and your business. Newer businesses, older or specialist assets and larger amounts may need a bigger deposit. Terms are usually set by the expected working life of the asset. We will tell you what the lenders on our panel ask for once we know your details. We do not quote interest rates on this website because the cost depends on your circumstances: see what affects the cost of asset finance.

    Frequently asked questions

How can a small business finance IT equipment and servers?

The usual routes are a lease, where you pay to use the equipment for a set term, or hire purchase, where you own it at the end. Get a quote from your IT supplier, then apply for finance on the full project, including installation where the lender allows it.

Can I lease laptops for my business?

Yes. Laptops can be leased as part of a wider IT project. Because applications start from £10,000, leasing usually covers several devices at once.

    Can software be financed?

Yes. We help businesses finance computers, servers and software.

What happens at the end of a technology lease?

Depending on the agreement, you can usually return the equipment, keep using it for a further rental, or replace it with newer equipment on a new agreement.

    Is technology leasing tax deductible?

Lease rentals are usually treated as a business expense, while with hire purchase the business may claim capital allowances. Check the current rules with your accountant.
