Heavy plant

Heavy plant and machinery finance for UK businesses

Reviewed by Luca Scalzo, Director, WFYA Limited · Last reviewed

Plant and machinery finance spreads the cost of large, high value machines, such as wheel loaders, dozers, cranes and large excavators, over a fixed term. Because heavy plant holds its value, lenders often see it as good security, and the business can keep its cash for wages, fuel and materials.

We Finance Your Asset is a credit broker, not a lender. We introduce heavy plant applications from UK businesses to lenders on our panel.

Who can apply for heavy plant finance?

    • Civil engineering, earthmoving and infrastructure contractors.
    • Quarrying, recycling, waste and demolition businesses.
    • Plant hire companies growing their fleet.
    • Agricultural contractors: see also agricultural machinery finance.

      Decision and payment

What can heavy plant finance cover?

    • Wheel loaders and tracked loaders.
    • Dozers, graders and scrapers.
    • Large tracked and wheeled excavators, including demolition spec.
    • Mobile and crawler cranes.
    • Articulated dump trucks.
    • Crushers, screeners and recycling plant.
    • New and used machines. Smaller machines: see construction equipment finance.

We arrange finance from £10,000 up to £1 million, depending on your requirements and circumstances.

What documents do you need to apply for heavy plant finance?

Our application form asks for the information lenders need first, so it helps to have it ready:

    • Your company name and Companies House number.
    • The director's contact details, date of birth and home address history.
    • Details of the asset: what it is, its price, the supplier and, for vehicles, the registration and mileage if known.
    • The deposit you plan to put in and the term you would like.
    • Your last three months of business bank statements, which you can upload with the form.

Lenders may then ask for more, such as recent accounts, proof of identity or the supplier's invoice, depending on the amount and your business.

How long does heavy plant finance take?

It depends on the asset, the lender and how quickly the documents arrive. The lender then makes its own decision; straightforward applications with complete documents move fastest, while larger amounts, used or specialist assets and newer businesses can take longer.

What deposit and term should you expect for heavy plant finance?

Most agreements involve some upfront payment, and the amount depends on the lender, the asset and your business. Newer businesses, older or specialist assets and larger amounts may need a bigger deposit. Terms are usually set by the expected working life of the asset. We will tell you what the lenders on our panel ask for once we know your details. We do not quote interest rates on this website because the cost depends on your circumstances: see what affects the cost of asset finance.

    Frequently asked questions

What is plant and machinery finance?

It is finance used to buy or lease machines a business uses to work, from excavators to manufacturing equipment. The most common forms are hire purchase, finance lease and refinance of machines the business already owns.

Can I finance used heavy plant?

Yes. Used plant is widely financed because good machines keep their value. Lenders look at the make, hours, age and condition.

Can I raise money against plant I already own?

Yes. With refinance or sale and leaseback, a lender advances money against the value of machines you own, and you keep using them. See sale and leaseback explained.

Can you help businesses in Reading and Berkshire?

Yes. We are based near Reading and help businesses across Berkshire and the rest of the UK. See asset finance in Reading and Berkshire.

    Do lenders need a valuation?

For high value or used machines, lenders may ask for an independent valuation or inspection. We will tell you if your application needs one.
