Hire purchase vs finance lease for a company van

Reviewed by Luca Scalzo, Director, WFYA Limited · Last reviewed

Choose hire purchase if your business wants to own the van and keep it for most of its working life; choose a finance lease if you want to use the van without owning it and prefer to spread VAT over the rentals. With hire purchase the van belongs to your business after the last payment. With a finance lease the lender owns the van for the whole agreement.

Both spread the cost over a fixed term. The right choice depends on how long you keep vans, your VAT position and how you want the tax relief to work.

How do hire purchase and a finance lease compare for a van?

Tax and VAT depend on your business: check with your accountant before you decide.

When does hire purchase make sense?

    • You plan to run the van until it is worn out or sell it yourself.
    • You want to claim capital allowances in the year you buy, which can reduce the tax bill when profits are high.
    • You can fund or recover the VAT at the start.

When does a finance lease make sense?

    • You replace vans on a fixed cycle, for example every three or four years.
    • You prefer VAT spread over the rentals instead of a large payment at the start.
    • You want the lender to carry the van's value, while still sharing in the sale proceeds at the end.

    What about contract hire?

Contract hire is a type of operating lease: you pay a fixed rental, often with maintenance included, and hand the van back at the end, with mileage and condition limits. It suits businesses that want predictable costs and no ownership at all.

    Frequently asked questions

Is hire purchase or finance lease better for a company van?

Neither is better for every business. Hire purchase suits ownership and long use; a finance lease suits regular replacement and spreading VAT. Many fleets use both.

Can I claim VAT back on a van on hire purchase?

A VAT registered business can usually reclaim the VAT on the purchase price of a van used for business, in the VAT return for the period of purchase. Check with your accountant.

Can I buy the van at the end of a finance lease?

Not directly in most finance leases, because that would make it hire purchase. At the end the van is usually sold to a third party and your business receives most of the proceeds, or you keep using it on a small secondary rental.

Which is cheaper, HP or lease?

It depends on the lender's rates, the term, the deposit, the van's value at the end and your tax position. Compare the total amount payable and the after tax cost, not just the monthly payment.

Can I switch from a lease to hire purchase later?

Not on the same agreement. You would settle one agreement and start another, which may involve costs.
