Minibus and coach finance for UK operators

Reviewed by Luca Scalzo, Director, WFYA Limited · Last reviewed

Minibus and coach finance spreads the cost of a passenger vehicle over a fixed term, so an operator can take on new routes, contracts or tours without paying for the vehicle up front. It is usually arranged as hire purchase, where the business owns the vehicle at the end, or as a lease.

We Finance Your Asset is a credit broker, not a lender. We introduce minibus and coach finance applications from UK businesses to lenders on our panel.

Who can apply for minibus and coach finance?

    • Coach and bus operators replacing or growing their fleet.
    • Private hire, airport transfer and executive travel companies.
    • Home to school and contract transport providers.

      We review and approach lenders

We check the details with you, including your operator's licence where needed, and introduce your application to lenders on our panel that finance passenger vehicles.

      Decision and payment

If a lender approves, you sign the agreement with the lender and the lender pays the dealer or seller.

What can minibus and coach finance cover?

    • 8 and 9 seat passenger vans and minibuses.
    • 12 to 17 seat minibuses, including accessible models with lifts or ramps.
    • Midi coaches and full size coaches.
    • Service buses for contract work.
    • New and used vehicles from dealers.

What documents do you need to apply for minibus and coach finance?

Our application form asks for the information lenders need first, so it helps to have it ready:

    • Your company name and Companies House number.
    • The director's contact details, date of birth and home address history.
    • Details of the asset: what it is, its price, the supplier and, for vehicles, the registration and mileage if known.
    • The deposit you plan to put in and the term you would like.
    • Your last three months of business bank statements, which you can upload with the form.

Lenders may then ask for more, such as recent accounts, proof of identity or the supplier's invoice, depending on the amount and your business.

How long does minibus and coach finance take?

It depends on the asset, the lender and how quickly the documents arrive. The lender then makes its own decision; straightforward applications with complete documents move fastest, while larger amounts, used or specialist assets and newer businesses can take longer.

What deposit and term should you expect for minibus and coach finance?

Most agreements involve some upfront payment, and the amount depends on the lender, the asset and your business. Newer businesses, older or specialist assets and larger amounts may need a bigger deposit. Terms are usually set by the expected working life of the asset. We will tell you what the lenders on our panel ask for once we know your details. We do not quote interest rates on this website because the cost depends on your circumstances: see what affects the cost of asset finance.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I finance a used coach?

Yes. Used coaches are widely financed. Lenders look at the age, mileage, condition and service history, and set limits on the vehicle's age at the end of the agreement.

Do I need a PSV operator's licence to get coach finance?

If the vehicle will carry passengers for hire or reward, your business normally needs the right PSV operator's licence, and lenders will ask about it. Smaller operations may use a permit instead. Have your licence or permit details ready.

Is it better to lease or buy a minibus?

Buying on hire purchase suits operators who keep vehicles for many years. Leasing or contract hire can suit those who replace vehicles on a fixed cycle or want maintenance included. See hire purchase.

Can I finance several minibuses at once?

Yes, subject to the lender's assessment of your business. See fleet finance.

Can I raise cash against coaches I already own?

Yes, through refinance or sale and leaseback. See asset refinance.
