Used EVs Are Now the UK's Fastest-Selling Cars

    ๐Ÿ’ก Key Takeaway

Auto Trader's August 2026 data shows used electric cars selling quicker than petrol, with 3-5 year old EV values up 10.2% year on year.

Something has genuinely shifted in the used car market this summer โ€” and if you've been sitting on the fence about a second-hand EV, the numbers are worth a look. โšก

Fresh Auto Trader data released this month shows electric is now the fastest-selling fuel type on the UK used market. Not the slowest, not the risky one. The fastest.

That's a reversal of the story we were all telling two years ago.

    The headline numbers

Across the whole used market, cars are taking an average of 30 days to sell so far in August 2026 โ€” a healthy, brisk pace by any historic standard.

But drill into the detail and the picture gets more interesting:

    • 3-to-5-year-old EVs are selling in an average of 20 days โ€” ten days faster than the market as a whole
    • The MG ZS petrol hybrid (1-3 years old) is the outright fastest seller at 13.5 days
    • The Polestar 2 and MG4, both pure electric, follow at 17 days
    • MG, Tesla and Polestar together account for seven of the top ten fastest-selling used cars

Marc Palmer at Auto Trader summed it up: electric remains the fastest-selling fuel type, with the strongest demand concentrated among 3-to-5-year-old EVs.

    Prices are climbing, not falling

Here's the part that changes the finance maths.

Like-for-like values for 3-to-5-year-old electric cars rose 10.2% year on year in July. In a market where used values have been broadly flat for months, double-digit growth in one segment stands out sharply. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

The average 3-to-5-year-old EV now sits at ยฃ20,037, against ยฃ18,731 for a comparable petrol car. So used EVs currently carry roughly a ยฃ1,300 premium over their petrol equivalents โ€” a complete inversion of the heavy discounting we saw in 2024.

    Why this is happening

    A few forces are converging.

Supply is finally arriving. The EVs sold new in 2021 and 2022 are now rolling off three and four-year PCP deals in volume, giving the used market its first proper stock of desirable, warranty-fresh electric cars.

Running costs are doing the selling. Home charging against 2026 pump prices remains a large monthly saving for anyone with a driveway, and that saving is easy for a buyer to calculate.

Battery anxiety has faded. Real-world degradation data on cars now four and five years old has turned out to be far better than the early scare stories suggested. Most batteries are holding up well, and the long manufacturer warranties give buyers a floor.

The price correction ran its course. Used EVs fell so far in 2023-24 that they became genuinely cheap relative to petrol. Buyers noticed. Demand caught up with supply, and prices found their level.

What it means if you're financing one

Rising residuals are quietly good news for finance customers, and here's why. ๐Ÿ’ก

On a PCP, your monthly payment is largely driven by the gap between the car's price today and its guaranteed minimum future value at the end of the term. When lenders grow more confident about what an EV will be worth in three years, that future value goes up โ€” and the monthly payment comes down.

We spent two years watching lenders set cautious residuals on electric cars because nobody knew where values would land. Data like this is exactly what shifts that caution.

    Two practical points, though.

First, a hot segment is not a cheap segment. Cars selling in 20 days aren't heavily discounted cars. If you want a 3-to-5-year-old EV right now, expect firm pricing and move decisively on the right one.

Second, strong residuals can favour HP as well as PCP. If the car is holding value, buying it outright over the term looks better than it did when everyone assumed EVs would fall off a cliff. Worth running both quotes.

    The wider read

Eight consecutive months of new car market growth, a record 27.5% EV share in July, and now used electric outpacing everything else on the forecourt โ€” the second-hand market has stopped treating EVs as an experiment.

For buyers, that means a healthy, liquid market with real choice. For anyone financing, it means better residuals and more competitive monthlies than at any point in the last three years.
